Our story

Founded in 2009. Still family-owned.

Dr. Sarah Harlow built this practice with a single commitment: every pet in San Diego deserves the same quality of care as the ones who live in the fanciest zip codes.

Where it started

One exam room. One rule.

"I opened Harlow because I kept seeing pets whose owners hadn’t caught things early — not because they didn’t care, but because vet care felt so transactional they dreaded coming in. I wanted to change that feeling."

— Dr. Sarah Harlow

Dr. Sarah Harlow graduated from UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in 2001 and spent eight years at a busy multi-doctor practice in the Bay Area, learning everything she wanted to replicate — and a few things she was determined to do differently. In 2009, she signed a lease on a converted craftsman bungalow on Mission Blvd and opened Harlow Animal Hospital with one exam room, one vet tech, and a handwritten sign in the window.

The early years were scrappy. Dr. Harlow kept the practice lean and personal by design — she knew every client by name, knew which dogs needed extra time in the waiting room, and personally called with every lab result. Word spread. By 2012 the practice had expanded to three exam rooms and brought on a second veterinarian. By 2016, the unit next door became the boarding and grooming wing.

Today Harlow Animal Hospital sees more than 4,200 patient visits per year, has four veterinarians on staff (including a board-certified surgeon and an exotic animal specialist), and holds a 4.9-star rating across more than 1,240 Google reviews. The practice is still independently owned — no corporate group, no private equity. Dr. Harlow still does morning appointments every Tuesday and Thursday.

The handwritten sign is long gone, but the original rule — that every pet deserves a vet who listens, explains, and follows up — has never changed.

Certifications

The credentials behind the care.

AAHA Accreditation — Since 2014

The American Animal Hospital Association accredits fewer than 15% of veterinary practices in the US and Canada. The evaluation covers 900+ standards across medicine, surgery, anesthesia, pharmacy, laboratory, emergency care, and more. Harlow first achieved accreditation in 2014 and has maintained it continuously since. Re-evaluation happens every three years.

Fear Free Certified — Since 2016

Fear Free is a certification program developed by Dr. Marty Becker and a team of veterinary behaviorists to reduce fear, anxiety, and stress in veterinary visits. Every member of the Harlow clinical team holds Fear Free certification, maintained through annual continuing education. We use low-stress handling techniques, high-value food rewards, and visit pacing designed to keep every patient calm — which also makes exams more accurate.

AVMA Member Practice

Harlow Animal Hospital is a member practice of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the California Veterinary Medical Association. All four veterinarians maintain active CVMA membership and attend annual continuing education conferences.

Community

We give back to San Diego’s animals.

Harlow Animal Hospital has been a clinical partner of San Diego Humane Society since 2011. We donate one clinic day per month to shelter medicine, covering wellness exams, vaccines, and minor procedures for dogs and cats awaiting adoption.

Dr. Harlow serves on the San Diego Humane Society Medical Advisory Board and co-chaired the organization’s 2022 capital campaign for the new Mission Valley adoption center. The clinic also sponsors the San Diego Community Cat Program’s TNR (trap-neuter-return) initiative, providing discounted spay/neuter procedures for feral colony cats.

★★★★★

We’ve been coming to Harlow for six years. Dr. Harlow diagnosed our dog’s autoimmune condition when two other vets missed it. She explains everything, follows up herself, and genuinely cares. There is no other vet in San Diego for us.

★★★★★

Dr. Rivera is the only exotic vet in San Diego who actually knows rabbits. He spotted GI stasis in our Holland Lop before it became critical. The Fear Free approach is real here — Coco is calm from the moment we walk in.

★★★★★

The in-house lab is a game-changer. We had results and a diagnosis in the same visit. Other vets had us waiting three days. Keely and Marcus are so good with our anxious rescue — she actually looks forward to coming here now.

★★★★★

Dr. Nair did ACL surgery on our lab mix and the outcome was better than we dared hope. The pre-op consult was thorough, rehab instructions were clear, and the team called to check in at 24 hours and one week. Five stars isn’t enough.
